"Chews" Wisely
Share
We're firm believers in the merits of chewing for your furry companions, be they cats or dogs. Their mouths are their primary tools, so maintaining oral health is crucial! Chewing offers an excellent means for them to flex their jaw muscles, keep their teeth clean, and engage their minds.
Yet, chewing isn't without its risks, like potential tooth breakage or choking hazards. Being mindful of these risks and knowing how to select chews safely can amplify the benefits while reducing the dangers.
To ensure safer chewing experiences, consider your pet's size, age, chew density, and chewing habits:
- Size: Opt for bones or chews too large for your pet to fit entirely into their mouth to prevent choking.
- Density: Stronger chewers might fare better with denser bones like shin bones or femur bones. For less aggressive chewers, lighter options like freeze-dried tendons or scapulas might be better.
- Chewing Habits: Bones are meant to be gnawed on, not crushed and swallowed quickly. If your dog tends to aggressively chew and break off sizable bone pieces, it's crucial to remove and discard those pieces.
- Age: Young puppies and senior dogs and cat have more sensitive teeth, and may be more at risk of breaking them on hard bones. Freeze-dried chews are a better option for them.
Additionally, always supervise your pet while they're enjoying a chew to ensure safety and avoid potential choking hazards.
We recommend rotating through the different shapes and sizes of Wild Nosh smoked bones and softer freeze-dried chews, different shapes will reach different teeth and offer variety for your furry friend.
